Geeky Math Equation Creates Beautiful 3-D World
This article was published by Wired on December 9, 2009. This is not a new news but I still find it amazing. The first time I saw this, I was like, “WHOOAAH! These are beautiful!”
This article was about the Mandelbulb. A group of math geeks created a three-dimensional analogue for the mesmerizing Mandelbrot fractal. The 3-D renderings were generated by applying an iterative algorithm to a sphere. The same calculation is applied over and over to the sphere’s points in three dimensions. In spirit, that’s similar to how the original 2-D Mandelbrot set generates its infinite and self-repeating complexity.
Zachary Abel can’t help himself when it comes to making really cool mathematical sculptures out of everyday objects:
I think about math constantly, and I see and look for math in everything around me. Geometry in particular fascinates me, and I delight in discovering hidden patterns even in the most mundane of objects. By transforming often-overlooked household items into elaborate, mathematical sculptures, I hope to share this sense of excitement, curiosity, and beauty that a mathematical outlook has instilled in me. Maybe I’ll even be able to learn and teach some math along the way.

Urban planning has gone awry in the fictional suburbs of digital artist Ross Racine.
From Racine’s statement:
Encouraging a reflective attitude by its distant viewpoint, the aerial view is used here to comment on society’s occupation and transformation of nature.
In addition, these invented suburbs exaggerate existing situations and drive the subject matter into the investigative domain of science fiction. Examining the relation between design and actual lived experience, the works subvert the apparent rationality of urban design, exposing conflicts that lurk beneath the surface. Beyond the suburban example, these digital drawings are a way of thinking about design, the city and society as a whole.
